This project encompassed the phased renovation of the Third Floor Data Center at the U.S. Department of State Headquarters building, located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, DC.
Approximately half of the original 7,000 sf data center had been previously modified for other use, and the data center, as originally configured, had ineffective cooling. The objective of this project was to reclaim the entire original Data Center, and to optimize the arrangement of data center equipment cabinets to improve cooling and allow better utilization, while maintaining support functions and services.
Key elements in the project were maintaining continuous data center operations and minimizing disruption to occupants. The Scope of Work included hazardous material abatement; demolition; security measures (exterior wall hardening, blast windows, and progressive collapse mitigation); upgrade of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, communication, fire protection, and security systems; as well as circulation and architectural elements (finishes, new tenant spaces, etc.).
