The Centex-Gilford Joint Venture completed the following projects in conjunction with the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority’s $3.5 billion building and expansion efforts at Dulles International Airport.
Main Concourse Renovation and Baggage Tunnel – Phase 1: Encompassed renovation of both ticketing and baggage claim levels in the original Terminal. Work included construction of a cut-and-cover baggage tunnel plus new ticket counter kiosks and baggage claim devices. The 700-foot long by 35-foot wide cut-and-cover utility and conveyor system tunnel was constructed inside the ground level of the Main Terminal. Excavation was phased through the existing Terminal slab on grade within a few feet of the traveling public, separated by a temporary construction partition.
New Southeast Baggage Basement: Demolition of commuter airline gates and construction of a new 97,000 sf, below-grade baggage basement as well as replacement airfield paving south of the Main Terminal.
New East Baggage Basement: Construction of a new two-level, 40,000 sf inbound baggage handling facility east of the Main Terminal for United Airlines.
These baggage handling facilities, while not in public view, are critical elements in airport operations and an airline’s ability to connect people with their luggage in a timely manner. Another important element was proving space to accommodate large screening equipment in order to satisfy security requirements. Much of the work was phased to maintain uninterrupted operations in both public and airfield areas.
