Gilford Corporation and PN Hoffman, Inc. purchased the historic, circa 1917 Mather Building, once home to the University of the District of Columbia’s arts program, for redevelopment as Mather Studios Loft Condominiums. Gilford Construction also served as General Contractor for the project.
The 10-story, 78,400 sf gothic style building with white terra cotta façade, vacant for over 10 years, is now configured as 52 luxury loft condominium residences plus street-level art galleries and performance venues. Eleven units were designated as affordable housing/work spaces for community artists through partnership with the DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and were sold through a lottery.
The lobby sets the style for the building with custom artwork, granite flooring and designer lighting. The one- and two-bedroom condominiums feature light-filled open space architecture and stylish design elements. Modern high-end finishes include rolling tract doors, exposed ductwork and brick interior walls, stained concrete floors, frosted glass sliding doors, and commercial-grade windows. Kitchens feature granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances, bathrooms are finished in marble, and penthouse units have spacious rooftop terraces. Building amenities include underground parking, concierge, and security.
